To groom a Sporting Breed with a Curly or Wavy Coat try these six ways
If you have a dog with a curly or wavy coat then you will know that grooming it is not as strait forward as grooming a dog having a smooth short coat.
For an example have a look at the breeds that spend time in water. these sporting dogs have exceptionally tough curly coats.
That's because these dogs really spend a lot of their time outside in the field, fetching items from the water, flushing out game, and being all-purpose hunting dogs, it's important that their coats are kept short and neat.
If not then their long and straggly curls will catch and lock onto every bit of stray twig, tree bark, pieces of rubbish, etc.
If you show your dog then it's really important to keep it's wavy or curly-coat in a neat and tidy shape by being scissored that way, and the correct way of scissoring the coat takes a lot of time and labour.
Owners who have curly or wavy coated sporting breeds that they use for hunting and as pets are much more prone to clip them down using an electric clipper to a measure of around 2 inches (with the exception that is of the curly-coated Retriever, whose coat is short enough that it doesn't need to be clipped).
Here are are six ways you can groom your wavy or curly-coated sporting dog breed:
1. Before you bath your dog, brush out the entire coat with a pin brush and/or a slicker brush to get rid of as much dead coat as you can. This will also help to get rid of tangles. Remove mats with a mat comb or coat rake, or cut through them with scissors.
2. Next, run a comb through the complete coat to be certain you have removed every tangle. With this step may have to take your time because you do not want to comb too fast and yank out any hair from the dogs skin.
3. Scissor the leg hair evenly, taking away surplus hair.
4. Cut hair from beneath the foot and between the foot pads. The foot should be rounded and should mix in with your dogs leg hair, it should look just like a powder puff over the foot.
5. Clip the torso down to 2 inches, or scissor off fuzz and shape by scissoring the sides to tidy it up. Shape the sides and rear that best matches the shape of the breed. An imperfect form can be slightly altered by the shape in which you trim the curly coat. be certain to remove off just a fraction at a time, now and then standing back to check the shape of the dog. It is also a good thing to use a picture of a well-groomed example of your breed in order to have a better idea of the right way of trimming.
6. Do not blow-dry or brush out your dogs body coat after you have bathed him, no just let the waves or curls dry naturally so they can stay in shape.
